AVANTGARDE
If cover art were the subject of scrutiny, this release would find
itself whisked away by the bin men for incineration first thing on
Monday morning. Fortunately for this female melodic black metal trio
it
isn¹t, and fortunately for us, the contents hold considerably more
appeal than the amateurish packaging. The outfit¹s fourth album
is rife
with honeyed melodies, devilish hooks and enigmatic textures. Acoustic
tapestries sprinkled with gentle keys (Lloth¹, Underwater
Persephone¹) are as integral to Astarte¹s formula as the aggressive,
lofty-tempo fare more readily associated with black metal (Black
Mighty Gods¹). Inviting eminent BM figures to exercise their vocal
cords, meanwhile namely Rotting Christ¹s Sakis (Oceanus Procellarum
(Liquid Tomb)¹) and Dimmu Borgir¹s Shagrath (The Ring
(Of Sorrow)¹)
will surely lend the marketing front potent ammunition. The execution
wavers slightly at times, but for the most part, the call of Sirens¹
does indeed prove tricky to resist.
